Affixes look simple at first, but the right choice depends on how your character actually plays. A big damage number can be useless if its condition rarely happens, while a modest resource bonus may let you cast far more often. When you are comparing D4 items, start with the parts of your build that feel weak in real fights, not the line with the flashiest percentage.

Build Around the Bonus You Can Keep Active

Horadric gear adds another layer to that decision. A charm and a matching ring or amulet can activate a two-piece Talisman bonus, but a weapon or armour line tied to a different set will not suddenly work because it looks useful. You need to check the named set, the equipped charm, and the active threshold together. Players often replace one piece of jewellery, lose the set bonus, and wonder why the extra line stopped working.

Check the base weapon damage or armour value before judging the affixes.
Find the skill responsible for most of your damage and keep only bonuses that support it.
Read the condition carefully, especially effects linked to Vulnerable targets, movement, crowd control, or a specific form.
Measure your defence and resource needs before dropping Life, resistance, cooldown reduction, or resource generation.
Inspect the Aspect, Greater Affixes, Tempering options, and Talisman interaction before spending materials.

What Each Affix Type Really Does

Ordinary affixes cover familiar stats such as Maximum Life, Attack Speed, Critical Strike Chance, skill ranks, and Movement Speed. Greater Affixes are stronger versions of those lines, not a separate combat category. Tempering adds new properties from the manuals available to that item, while an Aspect supplies a Legendary power rather than a normal stat. Cooldown reduction can support damage or defence, depending on whether it keeps an attack or an emergency skill available.

Crafting Decisions That Save Materials

Enchanting replaces one eligible line, so choose the weakest property with care. Once a Greater Affix is replaced, its enhanced status is lost. Tempering attempts are limited, and a promising item can still miss the property your build needs. Masterworking makes more sense after the base stats, Aspect, and tempered lines are already worth keeping. Do not pour materials into a temporary item just because its first roll looks exciting.

Choosing Horadric Lines by Class

Each class wants something different. A Barbarian may value Attack Speed or Berserking uptime, while a Druid might prefer companion ranks or form-based mobility. Necromancers can look for minion damage and minion Attack Speed; Rogues may favour Marksman or Trap support. Sorcerers often weigh Frost cooldown reduction against Barrier Generation. Spiritborn, Paladin, and Warlock builds should judge Block, movement, Aura, Hellfire, Abyss, or form-specific defence by how often those effects stay active. In practice, steady bonuses usually beat stronger lines that only work once in a while. Build your first set around survival and resource flow, then test cheap D4 items against the gear slots they would replace.
